Review by Kathy Parsons
Winding Down is the companion sheet music book for David Nevue's 2015 album by the same name. All fifteen of the pieces from the album are included, transcribed to match the recording note for note. Fourteen of the pieces are solo piano, and the book also includes the duet Nevue co-composed with Neil Patton called "Clockwork." "Clockwork is presented in three formats - Primo, Secondo, and both parts together - but otherwise, they are identical. (Although there are more pages to turn, I have used the version with both parts together with my piano students so I could watch what they were playing and know where we got out of synch. Although I wouldn't call this an easy duet, it's a blast to play and students love working on it!).

Overall, the music in this collection is somber and on the dark side, inspired by David Nevue's growing sense of the shortness of time, with major world events accelerating from crisis to crisis so quickly that it's impossible to keep up. “My awareness of this, and of what I know is yet to come, has created a yearning in me. The music on this album is a reflection of that yearning.” Nevue’s primary message is one of hope and of looking forward to Jesus’ return.

The songbook is available as a spiral-bound book from Nevue's website and from Amazon as a regular bound book. I've used both, and the spiral-bound books are MUCH easier to play from because they stay open on the piano without being propped. The paper in the spiral-bound books is also a little heavier, so those books will last longer with frequent use. Most of the music is not difficult, and I would place the pieces at an upper-intermediate to early-advanced playing level. The layout of the scores is roomy, clear and very easy to read. There are suggestions for pedaling, metronome settings and plenty of dynamics that also match the recording and make this music excellent for teaching material for advancing students. I highly recommend it!
