Review by Kathy Parsons
Moods, Impressions & Souvenirs is the companion sheet music book for Pam Asberry’s 2020 album by the same name. All eleven piano solos from the recording are included. Pam did the transcriptions and Thomas Wubbenhorst and I proofed them, getting the pieces as close to the recordings as possible. In addition to the sheet music, the book includes an introductory page with insights into the origins of and inspirations for the music as well as an “About Pam” page in the back. The printed books are spiral-bound and have a beautifully enlarged version of the CD cover artwork on the front cover. (The songbook is also available as a download from Pam’s website.)

The sheet music itself is very well spaced and easy to read. None of the pieces are difficult, although this is definitely not music for beginners. Some of the timing and a few of the key signatures are a bit more advanced (playing triplets against eighths, a few pieces have four or five sharps or flats in the key signature, etc.), but with some time spent practicing, most pianists at an upper-intermediate to early-advanced playing level should be able to master all of this sheet music. The music is melodic and expresses a wide range of moods and emotions from very dark to bright and lively. It’s an exceptional songbook with dynamics, metronome settings, and expression instructions/suggestions clearly marked throughout. Not all sheet music books have the phrasing marked, but this one does (like me, Pam is a long-time piano teacher, so we like details like that!). I really enjoyed working on this sheet music as it was being finalized, but I enjoyed playing through the finished book even more! This one won’t be going on the bookshelves any time soon! Both versions of the book are available from PamAsberry.com. Very highly recommended!
