Review by Kathy Parsons
“Penguin Parade” is the sheet music for Suzanne Herman’s 2025 solo piano single. The music was inspired by an expedition Suzanne took to Antarctica where she was able to watch the penguins in their natural environment. Quoting Suzanne:

“The penguins were both elegant and playful. They waddled one by one across the ice and snow. It was mesmerizing! Diving in and out of the water, they always seemed to have a smile on their penguin faces….Watching them was like encountering a penguin parade!”

The sheet music was transcribed by Suzanne Herman and I proof-read it, so it matches the recording as closely as is possible. A piano teacher herself, Suzanne included essential fingering, phrasing and plenty of dynamics. It’s a fun piece to play, and I think most pianists and piano students at an upper-intermediate playing level should have little difficult in learning this beautiful piece. I think it is especially interesting that Suzanne was able to capture feelings of both grace and lighthearted playfulness in the music.

The piece is composed in the key of F major (1 flat) and there are no reaches of more than an octave. It is four pages plus a lovely cover photo of a group of penguins! The sheet music is available to download from Suzanne’s website as well as from SheetMusicPlus.com and SheetMusicDirect.com. Highly recommended!
